#30DayFestiveFoodBank

Hello Readers

I don't have a lot of spare money knocking around not much at all in fact. This said I am pretty sure I can find 50p a day for the next 30 days to buy a value food item. I have donated to the local food bank on a number of occasions and almost had to call upon them for help myself a few times. I was lucky when things got really tough and I found myself in that situation I had friends or family who were able to help me out. Whether that was having us over for tea a few times that week or giving me a tenner so I could get enough of the basics to keep us going until my next payday. Some people are not as lucky as me and do not have the wonderful support network that I have. When a crisis hits these families they go hungry and in this day and age no one should have to go hungry especially at Xmas. That is why I have decided to take part in the #30DayFestiveFoodBank challenge in November. I learnt about it over at frugal queens blog and felt I simply had to join in.

The challenge is as follows..... for each of the 30 days of November find or buy something to donate to your local food bank. Most local food banks will have a list of items that are needed if you are not sure of what to donate. At the end of November take all the items you have bought or gathered together to your local food bank to be distributed in time for Xmas. It couldn't be simpiler.

Halloween On A Budget

Happy Halloween

Hello Readers Hope everyone in blogland is keeping well. Yesterday I said I was going to share with you how we do Halloween on a budget. Love it or hate it Halloween comes round at the same time every year. My personal opinion is that since I was a kid it has become way to commercialized. When I was a kid you made your own costume using stuff you had at home already. You used a plain old carrier bag to collect treats from your neighbors and that was about it. Nowadays you can spend a fortune on an outfit ready made and purchased from a store and it doesn't end there. You have to have a fancy Halloween bag or container for collecting your treats. Then there's the Halloween parties, decorating the house, and even schools have jumped on the bandwagon. Lots of schools now have Halloween themed fancy dress competitions. This often leaves cash strapped mums in a panic as they don't want their little one being the odd one out.

Now I know this all sounds like I am a bit of a scrooge but this couldn't be further from the truth. I have 3 sons who love Halloween, they love the fun, the activities, and of course the treats. I love children and seeing them enjoying themselves. This said there are ways of doing Halloween on the cheap even if you are on a tight budget and the best bit is the little ones wont have a clue that you spent substantially less than their best mates mum did. First I am going to share with you what we have done this Halloween and then I am going to give you my tips for doing Halloween on the cheap next year.

We have had great fun this Halloween and it has cost me very little. Eldest son is now 18 so to old for trick or treating, middle son (nearly 13) said he wasn't bothered by it and just wanted to stay at home, youngest son said he wanted to celebrate and have fun but not go trick or treating. So this afternoon youngest son and I carved a pumpkin which was lots of messy fun lol. This evening we both dressed up and handed out goodies to the trick or treaters. In between handing out treats we sat and watched a family Halloween film together and munched on some popcorn. For tea we had spooky severed finger hot dogs. It has been a lovely evening and we have had lots of fun but the best bit is it has cost me very little.

Costings for our Halloween are as follows.....

Pumpkin 50p (They were 2 for £1 in Morrisons or 75p each. My friend only needed 5 so I gave her 50p and she bought 6)

Carving set 0p (I still have the same one we have used the last few years. I simply wash it up after we have finished and store it with all the other Halloween items. I bought it just after Halloween a few years ago reduced to 25p)

Tealight 0p (I have lots in the house where I burn lavender oil to help with the boys autism and ADHD).

My Costume 0p (Black leggings and black hoodie and believe it or not the black and white tutu I already have at home. The tutu was bought for £4 a few years ago for a friends fancy dress birthday party. The mask I got from Poundworld for free using a voucher from the sun newspaper. The sun newspaper was also free from when we went to the kids club at the cinema on Friday).

Youngest Sons Costume 0p (This came out of his dress up box. I bought it from one of the Facebook selling pages second hand for £3 last year some time).

Sweets for the Trick or Treaters £3 (9 packs of Frozen biscuit bars. There were 8 in each pack so for £3 I got 72 treats).

Hocus Pocus 0p (We already have this in our collection it was bought from cash generator for 50p ages ago).

Popcorn 0p (I buy a big bag of popping corn once a month for £1 and we usually get about 6 big bowls out of a bag).

Spooky Severed Finger Hot dogs  70p (2 packs of yellow stickered finger rolls 10p, tin of 8 hot dogs 50p, tomato ketchup for blood 10p. This was enough for my family of 4 to have 2 hot dogs each with 4 fingers rolls left over for lunch tomorrow).

Total cost of our Halloween £4.20

Tips and Tricks for saving money on Halloween

1= Buy a medium sized pumpkin instead of a large one. There is not a lot of difference in size but a medium one will cost you half the price of a large one.

2= Buy your carving kit just after Halloween at a reduced price. Wash it up after using it and put it away for next year. If cleaned and stored properly it will last you a good few years.

3= Where costumes are concerned see what you already have at home, raid the kids dress up box and see what they already have that can be used before hitting the shops. Buy outfits from discount stores such as Poundland and Poundworld just after Halloween when they are selling them off half price and put them away for next year. This also goes for Halloween decorations, treat bags, and treat containers.

4= Keep your eyes open in charity shops and online selling pages for family Halloween DVD's going cheap or borrow them for free from your local library. Pop some corn at home and have a family Halloween movie marathon.

5= With regards to Halloween parties you could just say no as I did this year and explain that you have already made plans. However if your little's like the idea of a Halloween party don't host one but attend one instead. Bake some spooky fairy cakes on the cheap as your contribution and your good to go.

6= If you are really strapped for cash and cant afford to spend much on treats for the trick or treaters buy cheapy sweets. Many years I have just bought several bags of smartprice toffees or bags of midget gems. Throw a few in each trick or treaters bag and they are happy. You can get a bag of toffees for 50p or a bag of midget gems for 25p.

7= Finally if for whatever reason you are not interested in Halloween in the slightest and think it's just another form of money making commercialism you can download a poster to put on your front door. This kindly informs people not to knock at your door trick or treating and you can just go about your everyday business and pretend Halloween isn't even happening.

Hope you have all had a spooktacular day lol

Frugal Entertainment And Earning Extra Pennies

Hello Readers
Hope everyone has had a fun filled frugal Sunday. I wanted to share a little of what we do for entertainment here at the frugal fun dome.

Did you know that your local Odeon cinema offers a kids club on the weekends and every day during the school holidays ? I did and as a family we make full use of this. For £2.50 each you can go watch a kids/family film with your little ones. Take your own drinks and snacks from home and it makes the trip even more frugal.

A note to those with disabled kids like me, you can get a free carer in with each disabled person that attends kids club. They don't have to be an adult either. Middle son is registered with young carers and Spurgeons so is a bonafide carer and therefore qualify's for the offer also. Simply inform the staff when buying your tickets of the number of disabled people and the number of registered carers and you will receive the discount.

On Friday myself and the 3 boys went to watch Pete's Dragon. OMG Readers this film was amazing I cried like a baby when Pete had to say goodbye to Elliot which all 3 boys found highly amusing lol. Here's how the costing worked out.....

Transport = £3.50 (youngest and eldest son have disabled bus passes and eldest sons gets a carer on for free so I only had to pay for middle son)
Tickets = £5 (1 disabled adult, 1 disabled child, 1 adult carer, 1 young carer)
Food and Drinks = £0 We took food and drinks from home that we already had in the house

Total cost for a family of 4 to visit the cinema was £8.50

On Saturday we had a movie day at home. We popped to the library and each chose a film we wanted to watch free of charge. Due to my meniere's disease I have a special account with them where as long as its not a new release I can borrow DVD's for free. I also don't have to pay late fees on any items I borrow from them. If you have an ongoing illness or disability ask your local library if they have accounts similar to this it really is a big help when your unable to get out to return an item due to being ill.

Costing for our movie day.....

Movies = Free from the local library
Food and Drinks = Free we popped some corn we already had at home

Total cost for our movie day £0

Today was not an entertainment day but was a frugal day. When things are tight you have to do everything you can to get through it. Not only does that mean cutting back and leading a frugal lifestyle but it also means earning extra pennies here and there when you can. Today I did 2 hours cleaning for a friend of mine which I do occasionally when things get on top of her. It helps her out and it gives me a few extra pennies in my pocket. I would like to point out that despite having Meniere's disease I do not claim any disability benefits for myself. The occasional as and when work that I do is done for friends who allow me to take youngest son with me. If I suffer an attack whilst I am working its no big deal I just stop what I am doing lay down and wait for the attack to pass then once the dizziness/vertigo has passed I just get back up and carry on with my work.Today I earned £14 which was perfect as I had no money left in my purse and I wanted to go yellow sticker hunting.

What is yellow sticker hunting ? Have you ever noticed that a few hours before a supermarket closes they start reducing any of there stock that has that days sell by date on ? If you time it right you can make some substantial savings. I always go to my local supermarket on a Sunday at 3pm yellow sticker hunting. I have become quite good at it and a few of my friends and relatives refer to me as the yellow sticker queen lol. Today I did rather well.....

Total cost £2.01

Doing this once a week helps supplement my monthly shop and keep costs low. I always do my meal planner for the week on a Sunday evening so that I can work any yellow stickers I have managed to get into the planner. Dinner tonight was hot and spicy chicken drumsticks, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, sweetcorn, and gravy for the boys and I just had a steak pie. The costing for tonight's dinner was as follows.....

6 Hot and spicy chicken drumsticks 9p (yellow sticker)
Roast potatoes 30p (yellow sticker)
Yorkshire pudding 15p (Tesco everyday value)
Sweetcorn 35p (Morrison's savers)
Gravy 5p (Tesco everyday value)
Steak pie 9p (yellow sticker)

Total cost to feed my family of 4 was £1.03 Sorry I didn't take a picture of dinner but the boys had it whipped away before I could take one lol.

I will back tomorrow with how we do Halloween on a budget.

Until Next Time
Much Love

Saturday 29 October 2016

Hello

Hello Readers let me introduce myself. My name is Maria and aside from being a mummy to 3 young men I am also a frugalista (a lifestyle I am trying to encourage my sons in). I want my boys to grow up knowing that money isn't everything. That you don't need brand name clothes, the latest gadgets, posh nosh, or expensive holidays in order to lead a perfectly happy and fulfilled life. In order to prove my point I want to share my monthly budget with you .....

Monthly Budget

Rent £403
Council tax £67
Water rates £35
TV, Landline, Internet £30
Mobile £20
TV Licence £11
Electric £70
Gas £0 (we are an all electric house)
Food £160
Entertainment £20
Xmas savings £30
Gifts £10
Clothing £10
Children's Savings £45

Total £911

I have an emergency savings fund of £500 should anything go wrong in the house and need replacing or repairing. Any money I have left at the end of the month after all the bills are paid gets put into my long term savings account.

We save money here and there in so many ways that I wanted to start this blog to record it all and to show the world you can live life on a tight budget and still have fun and all your needs met. My children know that nothing in life is free and that if you want something you have to go out there and earn the money to pay for it. My eldest son is Autistic but that does not stop him sharing a weekly paper round with his 12 year old brother to top up his disability money. Eldest and middle son also run errands not just for me but for friends of mine also and get a pound or two for doing so. Youngest son who has Autism, ADHD, and suspected Epilepsy also does little chores around the house to earn money which he likes to spend on comics and stickers lol. If they want a big ticket item as middle son did a few years ago (a special gaming PC cost £349) they will ask family and friends for money instead of gifts at birthdays and Xmas. It took him 18 months but middle son worked his butt off and saved up for that PC and guess what because he had to work hard and save for it he looks after it a darn site harder than if it had just been given to him on a silver platter. I am proud of the impact my frugality has had on my children and the fact that they are all willing to work hard in order to earn the things they want. I hope you will enjoy this little blog of mine and maybe some of my hints and tips can help you slash your spending habits.

Until Next Time
Much Love
